A Step-By-Step Guide to Installing Your Own Air Suspension Kit

Installing an air suspension kit can be a very straightforward task or a months-long project. It’s why we offer installation services here at the shop. But don’t let any of that turn you off from air suspension. This is something you can do yourself. You just need to have the right tools and some patience.

We obviously can’t cover every type of vehicle out there, so we’re going to go through the broad strokes. For the specifics, hit us up and we’ll see what we can do to help guide you down the right path.

Installing the Suspension

Let’s break this down into a few different options. Some vehicles use struts, which are essentially coil springs and shocks in one unit. If your vehicle uses struts, it may have a kit available that allows you to remove your factory models and install new ones with air bags. A good example is this kit for a 1998–2010 Volkswagen Beetle.

Don’t worry if you don’t have struts though, because there are other options. This kit for a 1958–1964 Impala fits into that category. It has cups and brackets to install a traditional air bag. Your car or truck may have a similar situation, and there may be a kit for you. But if not, you can always make your own cups and brackets, you just need to be handy with a welder or know someone who is.

Installing Air Lines

Now you need to get the air to the bags, so let’s go with air lines. You want D.O.T. approved air lines, as they’re the ones truckers use to stop their rigs, which means they’re pretty tough stuff.

Air lines should be secured with clamps or zip ties, but keep them away from anything hot or a moving component. You don’t want them to melt or get rubbed through, so keep them safe.

Installing the Air Management System

Once the air bags are in place, the next issue is the air management itself. This is the compressor, tank, valves, pressure switch, and all of the goodies that control the air bag system.

For that you’re going to need some wiring, and we usually suggest something like our Dual Compressor Wiring Kit, which comes with all the stuff you need to properly wire your air setup. You will also need fittings, but the kind and size you need vary wildly based on your setup. Again, if you need help, ask.

Finally, it’s mounting everything in place. Most truck folks install their air management under the bed floor or in the bed itself, while car and SUV people go with the trunk or rear cargo area. Wherever you decide to do it is up to you, but keep it away from heat and moving parts as you will have air line running to your setup.

Keep At It

If you need extra help, don’t worry, we’ve got you. Drop us a line, hit us up on social or give us a call. Plus, we also sell a book on the topic: How to Install Air Ride Suspension Systems. It has a lot of the finer details not covered here, so consider that if you hit a snag.

Good luck and have fun!
