When we need an adjustable coilover setup for a project, one of the first places we look is QA1. They set the standard for high-quality suspension parts years ago, and if you’re looking to build a truck or car that handles like a slot car, you start with QA1.
But is that all that they do? Not even close. Let’s go deeper into the world of QA1 with this week’s brand spotlight.
Shockingly good performance.
There can be no question that QA1 knows how to build a good shock. They make them in a standard non-adjustable format, as well as single- or dual-adjustable models. So what’s the difference?
Let’s look at a pair of shocks that you can option each way. This is a single rear shock for a 1999–2006 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 2WD with 2- to 4- inches of drop. The non-adjustable model works great, and will give you a high-quality shock absorber that performs nicely. But what if you want more flexibility? With the single-adjustable model, you can turn the dial at the base of the shock to tune how firm or soft the shock dampens your ride. And if you really want to go nuts, get the double-adjustable shock. This one will allow you to individually change compression and rebound settings, which gives you the best options possible.
Point is, with QA1 you can get as crazy as you want, and they’ve got the parts to make it happen.
Bolt-on components make for even better handling.
Now let’s stick with that same truck, the NBS 1999–2006 GM fullsize. Those things have leaf springs out back, so putting a coilover in place of the shock isn’t going to help you out much. Instead, you need to convert everything to a link system, and that means a whole bunch of fab work or praying there’s some kind of kit out there that solves your problem.
Wait. There is? Of course there is, and QA1 offers it as a rear coilover conversion kit. This is everything you need to swap those crappy leafs for a torque arm system and it includes new gas tank mounts, too. This is a super beefy setup, which means you know it’s going to work great for the type of handling you can do with these parts.
And obviously they don’t just make stuff for trucks, even though their upper control arms and lower control arms for the NBS GM fullsize is pretty great, too. They have conversion kits for cars like this one for 1967–1969 Camaros. Who knows, they just might have the parts you need.
Dialing it up a notch.
The folks at QA1 make a quality, made-in-the-USA product that we use all the time. If your goal is to get your car or truck handling better, start with checking them out. You’ll be glad you did.
