Can Air Suspension Increase My Vehicle's Ground Clearance?

Can Air Suspension Increase My Vehicle's Ground Clearance?

Not everybody wants to slam their car or truck on the ground. We know that not only from personal experience, but also because of our customer base. While the majority absolutely want some kind of suspension modification that would help make their truck a little cooler, others need it for accessibility reasons. Also, there are some people who already have cars or trucks that are pretty low and just want to get it up a bit higher to clear their driveways.

Which brings us to the big question: Can air suspension increase my vehicle’s ground clearance? In a word, yes. But in more words, yes, but it’s more complicated than you may think.

Taking Big Bigger

If you have a vehicle with an already large amount of ground clearance, your typical air suspension kit will do what it can to take you up even higher. For example, there’s this Accuair kit for the ’07-’17 Jeep Wrangler JKU. It will allow you to increase your vehicle’s ground clearance with the push of a button. You can also use the kit to lower your Jeep, but by no means is it going to be slammed. At the end of it all, you’ll be able to take your ride off roading or cruising to the mall at a variety of heights.

If your truck or SUV is something different, you can also fabricate an air bag system to add to the ground clearance. This first became a big thing in the late 1990s with people lifting their already tall F–250s to staggering heights using a very prominently displayed air bag kit. So even if there is no vehicle-specific setup for your vehicle, there is a way to add to your ground clearance with an air suspension kit.

Taking Low Bigger

Now if your car or truck is already low — a Corvette, Porsche or Ferrari, for example — then you might have options. For example, we sell Universal Air’s kit for 2020–2025 C8 Corvettes. That looks like it adds some ground clearance to your car based on the photos, but we would have to take some measurements to be 100% sure.

This is the situation with a lot of cars. We can likely make something custom that works for the particular vehicle, but there may or may not be a kit that bolts right in. Or, if there is, it may be designed to lay the car out. You can adjust the threaded body of the strut to lift the cat higher, but what effects that will have on the suspension, handling and ride quality are unknown.

There are Options

We’re not the kind of people who discourage others from modifying their cars or trucks. But if your goal is to increase your vehicle’s ground clearance, you may run into a few hurdles. It’s not impossible, and we can likely figure something out, but set your expectations accordingly.

With all that said, if you do have questions, don’t hesitate to stop by the shop, hit us up on social or just give us a call. We’re here to help, so ask away.
