Off-Roading With Air Suspension: The Best Of Both Worlds?

Have you ever taken a vehicle off road? It can be a lot of fun to climb hills, rock climb and see how you can dig yourself out of a jam. Traditionally, this has been the world of static suspensions, in that you buy a lift kit or other setup designed for off roading, and then get after the trail. But what about air suspension? How does that play into things?

As it turns out, pretty well.

How It Works

Like almost every air suspension system, there are going to be stock parts that you keep and those that you replace with air bags, air struts or something similar. Take this kit for a 2015–2025 Jeep Gladiator JT, for example. It swaps out the coil springs for air bags front and rear, but also replaces parts of the suspension itself with beefier components. In that sense, an off-road vehicle with air suspension is just like any other vehicle with air suspension, it just happens to drive in different places.

But these types of kits bring with them other benefits. If your off-road vehicle is also a daily driver, then adjusting the height for comfort is completely straightforward. You can even lower the truck or SUV down to get into parking garages or drive-thrus with lower ceilings. It can be a reliable rig for taking wherever you want.

Then, when you hit the trails, you can sink it down for low-speed crawling. Or, if you see a large obstacle, raise the whole thing up to give yourself added clearance. And in some scenarios you can use the air bags to apply downwards pressure on a corner that might not have contact with the ground, which then gives you more traction once everything is positioned correctly.

But that’s not all

There are lots of benefits

Let’s say you’re up on the trail and you reach a point where you need more traction. The solution for many people is to let some air out of the tires, so you do that and then go forward on your way. How do you fill them back up? You would have needed an onboard air system to do that before, and now, with air bags, it’s already there. You can add an inflation system to your tank and be good to go.

What about those times when something breaks and you need an air tool. How do you handle that out in the middle of the backwoods of wherever? Again, having an onboard air system helps out with that a lot. Every little bit of assistance goes towards getting you back home safely, and in this case access to an air tool may make the difference.

You’ve got options
