There are a lot of benefits to having a car, truck or SUV with air suspension, particularly if you’re building something custom. But not everyone out there wants their vehicle slammed on the ground or dragging frame, yet they do need something that can safeguard their cargo. As it turns out, air bags are still the answer.
Having an air suspension helps a ton when it comes to towing or hauling around heavy loads in your bed. It can aid with vibration for sensitive parts and prevent damage in certain scenarios.
How? Let’s find out.
Adjustability Gives You Flexibility
Every time you load up the bed of your truck with a bunch of heavy parts, the rear end starts to sag. In some cases, you’re either overloading the rear suspension entirely, or risk doing so the first time you hit a bump. What can you do about that?
Many trucks come standard with leaf springs, and just like every other spring, they have a spring rate (That’s the amount of pressure it takes to deflect the spring one inch). But air bags have a variable spring rate, which means if you have too much weight in the back, you can just put more air in the bags and your spring rate increases. It’s what our rear bag helper kits are all about.
This has another benefit, too. Have you ever gotten into a truck and it rode stiff because it didn’t have a load in the back? If you replace your rear leaf springs with a parallel four link or something similar and use air bags as your spring, all that goes away. You can set your height for somewhere comfortable and be on your way.
Shock Absorption Helps Prevent Damage
Having a truck that floats on air has another side benefit, which is cutting down on vibrations. If you’re carrying something sensitive to bumps or delicate in general, hitting a pothole can ruin your day. But with air suspension, you can cut down on those shocking moments by letting out more pressure to give you a smoother ride. Better yet, let’s just take your everyday kind of bed load: lumber. Do you want to have a bunch of 2X4s bouncing around in the back of your truck?
Then there’s towing. Whether it’s a gooseneck or a hitch, you can even out your bed so the trailer is kept smooth as well. Now you can carry that load of grandma’s old vases without worrying.
